7th grade boys

Jon Tropf

I played four years of prep basketball at Van Buren (Ohio) High School , which were highlighted by back-to-back regional final appearances my junior and senior seasons. During the last three seasons,  I have been a student manager for Eastern Michigan University men basketball team. My previous coaching experience includes coaching 8th grade, 9th grade and JV boys teams for Van Buren during summer league seasons. I also served as head coach for a YMCA men’s team, which went undefeated. I plan to graduate in April, 2012 with a B.A. in history.

7th grade girls

Matt Cole

I have played and loved the game since the age of 5. Basketball is a passion in my life. My coaching experience includes leading several youth teams while in high school and college. When my own kids were old enough to hold a ball, I became their coach as well.  I coached my oldest daughter through 9th grade and after she reached high school started, I began coaching my twin girls.

I believe in teaching fundamentals of the game, in improving skills and in the theory that the team is the most important part of the game.  A youth coach can make or break a student-athlete’s desire to play the game. I strive to be the best and offer timely, positive feedback to make the girls better basketball players, better teammates and better people as they move forward in life.

I attended high school in Plainfield, Ill., a suburb about 30 minutes south of Chicago.  I’m currently a student at Eastern Michigan University where I am a manager on the men’s basketball team and hope to walk on as a player next season.  I have been playing basketball since I was 8 and I can truly say I love the sport.  I look forward to working with the kids and teaching them about the game of basketball in a positive, exciting and fun way.  At the end of this season I hope the boys will be able to walk away and say that they had fun and learned a great deal about the sport of basketball.

I have previously served as an assistant on high school boys varsity and girls JV teams. As a player, I had three years of varsity high school experience and also competed at the college level.  My high school team went 50-2 during my junior and senior seasons and won back-to-back state championships in Minnesota.  As a freshman at Calvin College I was the sixth man on the conference championship team.   Although I have graduated from college, I still play and try to improve my own game.  I’m excited to coach the 9th grade team.  It will be a learning experience for me and I know that it will be a learning and growing experience for the players, too.

I grew up playing and following basketball in Kentucky, where I was raised in the town of Madisonville, which is on the state’s western side.  For the past two seasons, while living in Baltimore, Md., I served as an assistant coach at the Bryn Mawr School. I assisted with the girls JV team for a season, and the girls varsity team for a season. After that experience, I decided to continue coaching once my wife and I moved to Michigan in March of this year.  I am excited to be a part of WWBA and have high expectations of my team. I am a firm believer in fast-paced play, and always working on the defensive end of the court. I will be fair and honest with every player, and know that we will be competitive this season.
